Name: Ali Holstein

Hometown: Huntington, NY

Age: 26

Favorite Hobbies: I love exploring Colorado! Hiking, road trips, live music, and trying new things.

Profession: Program Coordinator at Girls on the Run

What inspired you to get involved with GOTR Rockies?: My mom! When I decided I wanted to move to Denver, I was looking for youth empowerment programs. I was not finding anything that seemed like a good fit for me. My mom then told me about Girls on the Run and it was exactly what I was looking for. The mixture of running games and engaging curriculum which all leads up the end of season 5k is really unique and it drew me in.

How long have you been involved with Girls on the Run?: 4 seasons

What’s your favorite thing about being involved?: My favorite thing is too hard to pick so I’ll have to give you two.

First, coaching! Having the opportunity to see the girls week after week start feeling more confident in themselves and get to know each other is so rewarding. Second, working with such wonderful volunteer coaches. It will never seize to amaze me that over 600 women in the community are willing to volunteer so much of their time to help the younger generation see their limitless potential. Our coaches seriously rock!

A memorable Girls on the Run moment?: My favorite GOTR memory happened my first season coaching. The girls got out of school and one girl ran up to me and whispered that her friend was having a bad day. I then saw one of our girls coming out of her class crying. She sat down but before I could say anything, one of the girls stood up and said to the group “how can we lift our friend up?” They then proceeded to do a cheer they made up on the spot including all of the things she was good at and how she helped each one of them feel good about themselves. It was a true testament to the program and how these girls choose to treat each other day in and day out. I’m crying just writing about it!

What’s your favorite day of the season?: The practice 5k is my FAVORITE. It is the first time many of the girls have run a full 5k and they get the opportunity to complete it as a team. I love seeing each girl feel that sense of accomplishment with her teammates and how they encourage each other along the way.

Favorite GOTR Energy Award: Super Super GIRL POWER!

Why should other women get involved?: I genuinely think every woman should coach at some point. You will get just as much out of the program as the girls if not more!

THANK YOU, Ali, for all that you do! You are a bright light within the organization and we hope you stay with us forever!
